Modesty can often be confused with shyness. Shy people seem modest because they act that way due to fear of rejection or inadequacy of expression. Modest people are those who dress and act in a reserved manner regardless of the size of their financial wealth or their influence in the world. Meekness, I would say, is a synonym of modesty. An example of modesty would be a beautiful girl who may be a business icon or a model, yet she does not flaunt herself outside of her public life (she does not party with the famous and speaks within measure). Cinderella is also a great example since she was beautiful and did not complain although she was oppressed at home. Even after she married the prince she still showed kindness to all those around her. The Cinderella fable portraits beauty, modesty, and meekness embodied in one person. Now, that's the kind of woman who makes my day.

I think that modesty is behaving so that you aren't making anyone around you uncomfortable--also the definition of good manners--and this includes covering up a reasonable amount of your skin, as well as watching one's language. Sadly, contemporary fads tell people to do just the opposite---talk loudly, use crude language, wear attention- getting skimpy clothes and get as many tattoos as you can find room for on your body. I'm not that old, but I really think that modesty is no longer considered a value here in the US.

People who dress nicely/conservatively. They act morally, for example they wouldn't gossip, nor would they act like they know it all.

i sometimes wonder why people don't take the extra step to aknowledge the comfort of others. i suppose you can call it the "ignorant american" mentality!
