The M113 armour is 2 inches of aluminium plate that has been compressed down to about 1 inch thick. This level of armour may have stopped bullets and grenades during Vietnam, however with the threats of IED's and other weapons that the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are facing this level of protection is simply not enough. The current generation of armour on the new Hummers is far more effective than this.
Also the M113 is over 40 years old, and is hardly reliable mechanically speaking. The Hummers are all of a new design and much better engineered and maintained. Some of the Hummers also can take 50 cal machine guns and Mk19 AGL's on the turret which matches the firepower that a M113 can deploy.

the m-113 is close to 50yrs. old, still a good troop carrier, but it's at the limit of want can be changed on it. The Humvee can go faster if needed to get out of kill zone.
the 113 changes that i know of are
troop carrier some with a .50cal on the roof controled by commander inside.
avenger type fire missiles at aircraft.
medi-vac
scout.

Because they are too slow and lack the flexibility of wheeled vehicles.
During my tour in Iraq we left almost all of our M113s back in Kuwait because we regarded them as more trouble than they were worth.

can't imagine they would be any better I spent 5 years driving a m577 (m113 variant) and the armor plate on those things sucks.
They are harder to maintain and much much slower.
The new striker or lav-25 would be better and South Africa has vehicles that would be better too. I suspect we are running out of money to buy all that stuff

just about our only role in Iraq is "patrolling". It is a waste of military to do police work.
