I was abused when i was younger and i can remember it. But, i also have the odd memory of something before that, when i was very small - every time it comes into my head i push it away. Am i imagining it, or is it possible that it really happened? My counselor said i block things out......is that common?

Many people do not know it, but your subconcious remembers everything, but you cannot conciously remember EVERYTHING (because it's not -conciously- brought to mind, being it is in subconsious memory) So while you are trying to (conciously) remember it, your (subconcious) does not want you to remember it. This is probably a good thing, and yes, blocking things like that out is very common. (and potentially healthy)

it is possible you were abused butits also possible for humans to create false memories even though to us they seem so vivid and real. you may have bloked the abuse out and now as you grow older and wiser you are bringing them back into reach as to deal with them. But this can also be difficult for you as you think you may have been abused you could be looking into every situation and person fromyour youth and wondering if they behaved correctly with you again giving you false memories. I think your best way forward would beto seek expert help maybe in form of recression hypnotherpy.

I block things out too. There are 3 years of my pre-teen life that I have no recollection of. Of course it is possible. Only you can determine this though. You should trust what your counselor tells you.

It is not unusual to repress traumatic memories. You will "remember" them when it is time for you to do so and you will be able to handle it.
