My husband and I have not filed in a while and I was wondering if there is a way that I can get all the reported income for me from the IRS instead of going to each employer??

And is it online at IRS.gov?

Ok, I said I haven't filed a return, it has been since 2003. I need most of my w-2's from 2003 - 2005. Can I get this information from the IRS?? As reported from my employers when they send this information quarterly??

PS - I am a bookkeeper and I do payroll so I know they get logs and logs of this crap when I send in Social security and tax checks.

You can get reported information for past years by going to any IRS office and requesting it. They can print it out for you on the spot and you can take it home with you. I have done this for several clients. That will not work for the current year as they don't have that yet even though the W-2's have all been sent out by now. If it is too difficult to get to an IRS office the request can be made by phone or mail. I beleive it can also be requested throughthe IRS.gov site, but I didn't see the link when I just looked.

If you didn't file a tax return in a previous year, the only place you can get your W2s from is from the employers who issued them.

It MIGHT be possible to get some information from the IRS but simply making the request is likely to trigger questions on why you didn't file. If you have an open tax year (you do if you didn't file) you don't want the IRS asking questions before you're ready to deal with the problem.

If you have a refund due for a prior tax year there won't be any penalty for late filing, but you can only get those refunds if you file no later than 3 years from the due date of the return. The 2003 tax year will close for receipt of refunds on April 17, 2007. Prior years are already lost.

An open tax year can be investigated by the IRS regardless of how long ago it was. For this reason it's in your best interest to file returns for all open years even if a non-payable refund is due. This starts the clock for the IRS to review the tax year and generally prevents them from filing a "constructed" return using whatever available information that they do have. If they do that they won't go digging for any deductions for you and may use average amounts for income that isn't typically reported from another source and this can hurt you.

Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, they can provide transcripts of the income information free of charge, it will take 7 to 10 days via regular mail. If you have access to a fax machine they can fax the information to you.
In order to receive actual photo copies of the information you would need to complete form 4506 and include $ 39.00 for each year that you are requesting, This process takes approximately 60 days.
