Bricks are made from clay, however, not all clay is suitable.
Our "timber clay" would not work.
They have to be baked at high temperatures for a long while to harden properly.
Drop one in a bucket of water, if it absorbes water quickly it hasn't been baked long enough. And I'm afraid you'll find a lot of those around, particularly those from south of the border.

Bricks are normally made of clay. They vary due to dyes and production processes for example the temperature that they are baked at or the amount of air etc

Clay, they used to be baked in the sun but that takes too long and is impractical in some areas so they heat them in giant furnaces. Did I sound like I knew what I was talkin about?lol

I don't know why you would want to know this, but as the other people have said, they used to be made from clay, but these days they are made from recycled shoes and car tyres.
