I want to create a website called "Basic Life Skills" that serves as a reference guide for people who...well, like me, frankly didn't get taught much before going out on my own. Stuff like: how to change a tire, how to cook basic meals- skills we take for granted that everyone knows. When I went ot college it baffled me people didn't know how to do laundry. Then there was this time where I was a receptionist at a job filing applications, and had a good time laughing at the people who filled applications out in red ink, pencil, and (my favorite) purple crayon. And then, I had a boyfriend who at 21 didn't know how to write a check, much less, balance a checkbook.

So the question; what basic skills did you not learn, and wanna be able to look up online? Cooking? Emergency sewing? How to get your keys out of you car when you lock them inside?

I fortunately have many and varied basic skills otherwise I would not have been able to raise two children alone, train to be a teacher and fix my car/washing machine etc as I never had enough money to pay to have them done. Having said that I agree that a lot of people do not have such skills. Some of the ones I think are important are filling out forms, answering basic questions, communicating effectively, wiring a plug,,,,,,,,,, etc

Good Luck

Well, I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I really wish I could compute numbers in my head, quickly. My math is atrocious and I think somewhere along the way in my early training, I got stuck, so I really don't even have basic math skills. I have to actually calculate a tip on my cell phone in restaurants. Perhaps, in time if I study hard I can acquire those skills. But as it is, I have none.

Budgeting and Grocery Shopping

It's so important to learn how to budget yourself according your income, and I don't think enough people learn how to do that - I know I didn't at first, and I'm still learning to some degree.

It's also important to learn how to shop. Sounds silly, but knowing how to get the most for your money can save you an awful lot of money. This is something, sadly, that I am still oblivious to.

Learning how to live within your means and getting the most for your money - these are two skills that can literally save you from certain disaster.
