Though you take a thousand steps away from God, it is only one step back to Him. You must be broken for your sin and repent, confessing to Him, and you will be restored.

That's all there is to it.

"If we make it our habit to confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us those sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (I John 1:9)

As with any shortfall in our carnal natures, whether it be alcoholism or any other moral deficiency, the first step is to admit that we have a problem which requires a solution. You apparently have taken that difficult, but vital first step. The second step involves being willing to start down the path to performing whatever it takes to remedy the situation.
You admit that it is YOU that is "far from God". You are to be respected and commended for coming to that understanding! It is like the old story of an elderly couple who were out for a drive one day. The wife, who didn't drive, said to her husband, "I remember when we were first married...how we always sat so close when we'd go out for a drive." The husband replied, "Well, it wasn't me that moved."
Man doesn't move away from God in one fell swoop...it is a gradual deception which takes place as we become busy with other priorities. Soon, it just doesn't seem so important to "sit so close" to God. It happens to all who will admit it.
I would say that you have started the trip back. What can you do to continue the trend? Find and attend a good Bible-believing church group in your area. There you will discover opportunities which will draw you closer to God. Your separation didn't happen overnight and it will not be so quickly resolved. It is a life-long process. You have to have "the eye of the tiger" and mean business. Then, God will honor you and your efforts.

You are never far from God or better yet He is never far from you. I've been there, and all I can tell you is what I did. Fall on your knees and just ask for help. Asking for forgiveness and confessing your sin is very important and is a necessary step but first things first. "Dear God Please help me" and He is there in a heartbeat. Helping, Healing and Guiding. I will pray for you

Isaiah 1:18-20......“Come, now, YOU people, and let us set matters straight between us,” says Jehovah. “Though the sins of YOU people should prove to be as scarlet, they will be made white just like snow; though they should be red like crimson cloth, they will become even like wool.  If YOU people show willingness and do listen, the good of the land YOU will eat.  But if YOU people refuse and are actually rebellious, with a sword YOU will be eaten up; for the very mouth of Jehovah has spoken [it].”

This shows that God will forgive if you show willingness to repent, and it don't matter how serious the sin may be.

maybee your not as far from him as you think read this!

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was
walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the
sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he
noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one
belonging to him, and the other to the Lord. When
the last scene of his life flashed before him, he
looked back at the footprints in the sand. He
noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed
that it happened at the very lowest and saddest
times in his life. This really bothered him and he
questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, You said that
once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all
the way. But I have noticed that during the most
troublesome times in my life, there is only one set
of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed
you most you would leave me." The Lord replied,
"My son, My precious child, I love you and I would
never leave you. During your times of trial and
suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it
was then that I Carried You."

It is easy!

If you are Catholic, talk with a Priest and give a good confession.

Spend some time with the New Testament, take time to Pray.

Leave the bad things behind you, you have been blessed to know that they did not bring freedom or happiness as advertised!

May God Bless you!

Peace!

ASK God to help you come back to Him. And whatever you do, know that He's watching you, know that whatever good you do wil make Him happy with you, and whatever bad you do may anger Him.... But He'll All-Merciful.
And most importantly, ask Him for forgiveness; you'll FEEL pure andinnocent, like a newborn child. He'll wash allll your past sins, and you'll feel that, too.
He has said:
"I am just as My worshipper thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him), and I am with him if he remembers Me.... And if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.'"
So, just ask Him to help you reach him, and I pray you find Peace, Truth, Success, and Happiness in Him soon :D!
Peace be upon you!

start praying. Read your scriptures, go back to church, and if that church doesn't have the answers to your needs, ask God to direct you to the one that will help you.
Jesus died for us so we could repent and get back where we need to be. He's done the hard part for you, now you need to use it.
Make ammends for anything you've done that might need ammends made for, say sorry where you need to say sorry.
You're on the right path just wanting to come back.
Good luck.
