My boss recently wrote an impeccable recommendation letter for me. This is actually second time he's done this. First time, I gave him a hand made thank you card, but this time I would like to give him some sort of small token of appreciation. One problem, is that he's one of those individuals who has everything.

I would get him a pretty glass candy holder for his desk. Could be inexpensive or Waterford.....your choice. Fill it with candy and attach a note thanking him for writing the recommendation.

the sticky part of this to not give a gift that appears too expensive. A simple thank you does not generally warrent expensive gifts. You say he has everything and generally those people aren't looking for gifts, just thanks.

Don't give something (price-wise) that seems to indicate more than a simple thank you.

Buy a thank you card and address it to your workplace as a whole. Inside it write a note thanking everyone for the shower and the lovely gifts. It was very kind of them and the gifts will come in very useful. If you got given money, and you have an idea what you'll spend it on, mention that in the card too, and say you look forward to bringing the baby in to visit them all. That would suffice. If you take in some home baking as well that would be a lovely gesture, and more than enough. I'm assuming most of the people concerned you thanked in person at the shower too? Regardless, expecting you to write 34 thank you notes in late pregnancy when your colleagues presumably know about the carpal tunnel is, well, cheeky, to be honest. Please don't stress about it, and best of luck with the baby when s/he comes.

Thank You cards are a nice remembrance for a special favor. The point is to simply thank another, not to necessarily wow them. Restaurant gift certificates or tickets to a favorite local event can step up the gift if it means that much to you. You are on the right track. You sound like a person who has earned the accolade.

I have found myself in this situation as well and it's very difficult to find the appropriate and professional "thank you" gift to reflect your feelings.

I echo the suggestions of the other responders. If your boss likes wine, definitely buy him a nice bottle. It's classy, professional, and he'll genuinely enjoy it. Champagne works too.

This may sound silly, but look on www.skymall.com. There are all sorts of stores that advertise/sell through them that have appropriate gifts. Check out Brookstone and Sharper Image too. Lots of random neat stuff.

Good luck!

You can make a donation to a charity in his name, a gift certificate for a restaurant that he may enjoy. A bottle of fine wine is always useful. Good luck.

I have never given a gift for a letter of recommendation.

My ex-bosses have always given me the letters as a matter of courtesy upon my leaving.

A note in the mail would suffice and express your pleasure for having had the opportunity to work with him/her.

How about a small but tasteful gourmet goody basket? Or one piece of expensive but yummy candy ($5)? A thank you balloon, tied to his chair with a streamer attached that says :Bob is the best!

Has everything? Just because hes your boss?

A person may just have a roof over their head and food/water, and a loving partner (maybe with kids too). As long as they work(even to make ends meet) - they could also have EVERYTHING they need in life.

Because 'Everything' is perceptive.

When will people wake up and realise that it is not the materialistic things in life that matter? You cant take it with you...

Flowers, a plant for his office, or a donation to charity in his name.
