A 4 or 5 degree centigrade rise in temperature in the Permian Era unleashed most of the methane on Earth, killing off most life forms. Many scientists think this could happen again this century. Why are college students not demonstrating, holding rallies and marches? Governments listen when the multitudes talk loudly.

Very good point. Unfortunately people are blinded by capitalism, marketing, advertising and ideals. Money rules the world, despite it being worth nothing if we ruin the planet. More awareness is needed in the general population to put pressure on the government and the corporations. People just use what they can buy without questioning the impact. It's all about buying power. The answer may lie in more revolutionary corporations leading the way to alternatives.

Big Business has too much influence on Government Policies and that results in the government eliminating the competition for development of other forms of fuel or energy sources. The special interest groups backed by corporations convince lawmakers that it is too costly to switch to alternative fuel sources, even though we indirectly and directly subsidize fossil fuels. Lawmakers are mostly thinking in the short term rather than thinking in the long term in their cost analysis and profit is the greatest motive. The long term costs of using fossil fuels include negative effects on health and environment, and the lack of sustainability seems to be completely ignored. College students do bring up these issues but remember also that Universities and Colleges are also backed by (funded by) government and Big business and so there is a control over the information and research that students have access to and there frequently is no financial reward for students to focus on these issues. The education system is also in a big decline in the USA compared to other industrialized countries.

First of all its not the giant corporations that are destroying our planet its the billions of people who drive cars that are destroying it. The corporations just supply an activity that is demanded by the billions of people worldwide and who's to say that they can't profit off of the use of oil if its going to be used one way or another.

Anything with a board of directors and profit incentives can't be all good.

We are screwing ourselves over for a buck.
Shooting ourselves in the herd.
Stepping on our own ducks.
Cutting off our nose to spite our finch.
Kicking ourselves in the asparagus beetle.

For the almighty dollar we're ruining it for everybody and everything, and people who deny it are three fries short of a Happy Meal.
Have a nice day.
