A transaxle is a combination of transmission and axle. BMW were some of the first car manufacturers to us the design where the engine and clutch were at the front of the car and the gearbox/axle were at the back joined by a torque tube.

This was to enable the car to be better balanced by distributing the mass weight of the engine transmission components over the entire length of the car.

Volvo continued with the design on their 440 series vehicles, and of course most formula type racing cars all use the trans/axle design.

A transaxle is a unit that combines the transmission (gearbox) and differential (in the centre of the driven axle) in one place.

Generally front-wheel-drive cars have transaxle transmissions, but a few rear-drive cars also have them (mounted at the rear, of course) - for example the current Maserati range except for the new Quattroporte automatic.

A Transaxle, is used in a front wheel drive vehicle. Due to space limitations and the engine being installed sideways, the transmission and the differential are incorporated into a single unit instead of seperate parts.

A common term among front wheel drive cars. The engine has to be put in sideways, so a transmission had to be made to accomodate this. This little unique setup of the transmission is otherwise referred to as the transaxle.

trans axel is the transmission and axel combination that sits under what mechanics refer to it as transverse or sideways engines //instead of being front to back

Well, NO Jeep has one. Transaxles are only in front wheel drive vehicles. A Jeep will have a transmission, and if it's 4 wheel drive it will have a transfer case and front and rear differential. Why do you ask?

commmonly known as a constant velocity Halfshaft.

It consists of 2 - 3 parts, seperated by universal joints located under ablack boot.Generally derives power from the transmission to the wheel.
Can also be found in newer style 4 wheel drive trucks.

Transaxle refers to front wheel drive transmissions, and NOT to only transverse mounted transmissions, it also refers to inline mounted engine/transmissions, as in the oldsmobile toronado, the cadillac eldorado, and a few other vehicles. transaxle is in short an assembly of the transmission and differential as one unit, hence-transaxle. hope this clears this up for you.

It relates to the position the gearbox sits in a front wheel drive car. It is mounted transversely across the front axle (although there is no actual "axle", just drive shafts).
