there are different types. I went to a couple of weekend ones when I was a teenager. There were 2 aspects to them: the social and the religious. It focused mostly on the religious during the day, and in the evening, the social aspect was celebrated.
At another retreat, which was held in a monastery, the religious aspect was much stronger, and at all three retreats, it began with prayer and song, breaking into smaller groups, and focusing on the theme, usually reconciliation, forgiveness, cleansing the soul and lighting candles. We ate together (at one retreat there were 300 to 400 people present) It would end with song, the sacrament of reconciliation, and the mass.
Very often, after such events, which were so moving, a spiritual high was attained that rivalled the best drug I've ever taken, the effects of which lasted more than 2 weeks and were unforgettable.
At another "retreat", which was more like evening classes in the church basement, I came to know the power of God in a way that no one can understand until you have scraped the bottom of the ocean floor of human sorrow. The glimpse I had then of the things that God will allow for the salvation of man is absolutely mind-boggling. However, not all people can accept this. It is like drinking from the cup of bitterness, and the meaning of suffering and life, and the oneness of us all.

I went for a couple of days with a Christian relative, although I'm an atheist. It was peaceful and the people there were okay but sitting in a room all day contemplating the meaning of scripture wasn't my cup of tea.

Yeah, retreats are awesome, you just can't treat them like such a big deal because they work best when you just let them happen. BEst idea :: Journal about it!

It has helped.
All are different but one key aspect is to be given time to reflect.
