It would probably be a few years; low-growing plants would not take long to cover many available sites but tall things would take several years to be covered I should think.
As for the animals, yes, rabbits would do well but so would rats as they are omnivorous, opportunistic and very adaptable. With the growth in number of rabbits, foxes would flourish - also very adaptable.
Cockroaches and flies would also do well, and ants.
After 1000 years, I imagine that only an animal that could swim would do well - unless of course the climate patterns change and the earth goes in for another ice age.
It could be really interesting.... Good question.

It would not take long, about 10 years. Though I think that the larger buildings may take longer to be overgrown as they are usually surrounded by concrete. The most dominant animal I'd say may be the fox or large aggressive dogs.

Wouldn't that look wierd? I think the cities would just be over-run with rats and the countries over-run with rabbits and it'll be like a war between them, but then all the pets that have been left behind would prefer rats to rabbits and eat them and all the larger animals like foxes would prefer the rabbits... so yeah, I think fleas would come out on top.

Flora would collonise within the year, without humans rats would not proliferate, in towns maybe dogs and cats would dominate, in our countryside, rabbits may well be dominate, but not for long, soon the cats and dogs would venture in, then not long after man would return to hunt, afterall our pets would become vermin and need to be controlled! Thats the human race for you!

My experiance tells me about 10 years is the norm. I base this on how disused roads and railways degenerate into a wilderness, it takes on average 10 years. As for animals, we would be overrun by rats and cockroaches.

A lot depends on rabbits I think. They would probably become the dominant grazers. That would slow down the establishment of trees.
