From "A Dictionary of English Surnames" by P.H. Reaney & R.M. Wilson, Oxford University Press, 1995:

King, Kinge, Kings:

from the Old English "Cyng" and "Cyning" (meaning "King"), a nickname from the possession of kingly qualities or appearance. Also a pagent name, one who had acted as a king in a play or pagent, or had been King of Misrule (during 12th Night celebrations), or 'king' of a tournament.

Early examples:

Mariota filia King, 1219, Surrey
William King, 1259, Huntingdonshire
Aelwine se Cyng, 1050, Devonshire
Wlfric Ching, 1150, London
Geoffery King, 1177, Cambridge
Wuluricus Gaufridus le King, 1182, Suffolk
Juliana la Kinges, 1275, Essex

With any common name, you can find numerous sites that show "where it came from". King is absolutely common, so that really won't be very valid.
If anyone has the energy, it is really more reliable (and fun) to take time to research the actual ancestor(s) with the name. Not to mention that sometimes (not always) people get back a few generations, only to find an adoption or step parent, and that their real ancestor has a different name.
