my 2 bitches were spayed 10 days ago stitches out tdy
. one has healed fine the other has swelling.
i was told even the one who has healed to not let her lick there why.
Also told me not to let other one lick either and to limit excersise. And said swelling cld last 6 to 8 weeks and to keep collars on. If they lick so how long do i limit excersise and how long carnt they lick it

the reason is because dogs mouths have a natural healing effect. it is in their nature to lick wounds however.....over licking can irritate the area and couse an infection due to build up of bacteria..since bacteria love to live in warm wet areas. I would keep the e-collar on for at least 10-14 days until you notice the area has healed. Hope that helps. worked with dogs for over 2 years...especially with vets and spay neuter facilities :0)

when they lick the area they feel the stitches and attempt to pull them out. If the one is inflamed and red there may be a little infection there. Use peroxicde or Betadine to clean the area and put on a healing salve. By licking she could damage the wound and just make it worse.

Until it has healed properly..if they lick it the scar it will not heal and only gentle exercise......(owner of a spayed dog).

you could get a lamp coller to stop them reaching it
