It really depends whats going on in your head. If its more of a chemical imbalance then yes but if you have had a bad childhood or something similar thatsaffected your life then obviously they cant surpress those memories, but they can help your 'mood'. That said not every pill suits every person and you may go through a few before you find the one that suits you.

If you are suffering with depression i suggest you have someone you can talk too, some one who will listen to your feelings.

Take care.

They work well if the problem you are having is a chemical imbalance. If you are depressed because of a situation, they MAY help you to cope with it, but in the end, you need to take care of the situation and then the depression will go away. But as to your question as to whether there is a high success rate: Yes, there is, if you find the right one for yourself...

Anti-depressants work for some, but not all. Some suggestions are that SSRIs (the most common) work as expected for somewhere around 60% of people. Whatever the statistic REALLY is depends on a number of factors.

-For what is the medication being prescribed (depression, anxiety, other?)
-With what type of therapy, if any, is the medication being used concurrently?
-Is the depression clinical, mild, moderate, severe, with psychotic features?
-How high is the dosage?
-What other medications are being taken, and to what extent do their effects interact with the anti-depressant?

In short, your question is a loaded one.

yes they do generally work after you find the correct one and the right dose for you. I have been on some since November but my GP has just increased them as they were not working. Talking helps as well either a best friend or a pro like a councellor, talk over issues that have brought the depression about.

Anti-depressents are prescribed as an aid to combat 'clinical depression'. One of causes of clinical depression is the lack of a chemical called seratonin in your brain. The tablets provide an artificial seratonin to help lift the mood and ease the symptoms, allowing you to tackle what is making you depressed.

These tablets take a good fortnight to 'kick-in' and start making a difference. The downside is that with some, you have to be weaned off them over a period of time.

Tablets do not work on their own; you do need to deal with the root cause of the depression.

Speaking from experience yes they do, but you may have to try a few before finding the right ones for you, if you are feeling low and feel anti depressants will help, your doctor will beable to guide and advise you as to which ones are best suited for you. But you do need to help yourself aswel, which is harder than taking the pills, good luck and remember you do not derserve to feel this way. x

Did you not watch the documentary regarding Prozacs, mental health and the likes? Apparently a group of people were given this drug whilst the other group were given a placibo, at the end of the trial, there was not a marked difference in both groups reaction to the trial, meaning what exactly? that anti- depressants and all it's likes are highly over rated, IT IS A FRAUD, THEY DO NOT WORK.A young woman killed herself whilst taking Prozac as stated on said programme.

It really depends on the root of the depression. A mild case that's happened for a clear reason may be dealt with by them.

Recurring and/or severe cases can be helped with them, but they can't cure the person on their own, they need psychological treatment alongside it.

They work for me. I have severe anxiety and my mind constantly raced. I would not go back there for a million dollars. Antidepressants are miracle drugs for me. That Prozac experiment mentioned above is crap.
