are there good and bad doctors.? and if the bad doctors make mistakes do the good doctors close ranks and cover for them?

i'm one. we're all totally incompetent and cover for each other all the time with a vertible farago of lies, falsehoods and half truths.
when we're sober that is. or not on morphne

Yes, there are good and bad doctors.
Medicine is not a cut-and-dry, black-or-white kind of thing, so many doctors may approach the same problem differently, and all of them can be "right".

That being said, doctors can screw up. In some places, there are cover-ups. More likely, however, other doctors don't want incompetent colleagues, and try to get them to become better educated, or seek a different profession.

The state boards of medicine are also very active in weeding out bad doctors, and will suspend or revoke medical licenses. This can be done for poor practice methods or for moral/ethical problems.

This is true of every profession or job. Also attitudes and expectations have changed. I am old enough to remember that when any patient died the commonest thing for the relatives to say was always 'well you did your best doc'. Now we are criticised for all our imperfections however conscientious we are. None of us is going to be right all the time! In general the vast majority of doctors are caring, though often tired, and try and do their best.
