Religion arouses strong emotions in people, historically and in the modern world has even led to war!
Mostly religious people see their Faith as a way of life, and dedicate their existence to their faith, they make many sacrifices for something that has not been proved..... all religions are based on faith.
Questioning a persons religion they tend to become very very defensive, its sort of like questioning a prized possession.
Its not rational, bet everyone knows that's just they way humans are?

Because it's very personal to them, and they haven't learned how to separate their emotions from their intellect and have a rational discussion about something so personal. Faith or belief systems are usually an integral part of the way we identify ourselves, so when we see our beliefs being challenged, unless we have learned to step back and see the challenge objectively, we feel that *we* are being challenged. So we respond defensively, emotionally, and without thinking too much about what we're gonna say. In other words, rudely.
Learning to step back and take a deep breath, and then discuss something-anything- calmly and rationally is one of the major parts of growing up. :)

Because there is not a shred of evidence to back up their faith they become incredibly defensive and precious about it, by throwing up a big fuss they hope to avoid answering any questions about their faith..it's a evasive tactic...don't fall for it.
