I have a soapstone sculpture that was painted, but over time has faded. I would like to repaint it but am unsure as to what kind of paint I can use on it. Does anyone out there have any clues for me? Thanks in advance.

Go to an art store and get artists enamels. They don't fade and go on easily. But they're also enamels, so they're harder and don't chip or scratch easily.

Soapstone actually looks better unpainted I believe, have you considered stripping the colour from it totally? If you want to add colour, strong colour, you could use either acrylic, easy to use, available quite cheaply and very flexible, or as another answerer suggested enamel paints, normally used for plastic or metal models.

If you really want to repaint it, you can use Bull's Eye 1-2-3 oil-based spray paint primer or any other type of oil-based primer. Once you've used this, you can apply ANY kind of paint on top.

Have fun....!
