Avoid Renault like the plague. Renault has extremely expensive aftersales and upkeep, Mazda is good but costly to maintain. I'd go for a Toyota. Good choice on the diesel engine, the price of diesel may not be different to petrol now, but they last a lot longer!

Go for the Renault as I have worked with both Jap car and French and the Renaults of today are far superior to any of the related jap cars.
Scenic is very nice indeed just cruises along with a diesel. A clio is also very nice and very quick depending on what engine you go for as is the megane.
I have the 1.6 Grand Scenic and would not change it at all.

Without a doubt Toyota.
I have had a diesel Toyota from new, it is now 12 years old and has done nearly 200000 miles, it has had a hard life but has never gone wrong and still feels good to drive.

For the best value for money, Toyota is the best option. Try the big diesel engine, it is rather refined and pretty good (DO NOT PICK A YARIS)

toyota is, in my opinion, the best car company, prior to my current car, i had an 87 camry that lasted 300,000 miles, and my friend had an 85 camry that lasted 500,000 miles, my current car is a 99 camry with roughly 99,000 miles, and hasnt had a single problem yet despite my abuse
