Yes, I know how you feel. Despite what people say, it is very rare for a top quality horse to break down like that, and when it happened I felt sick in a visceral way.

After experiencing the initial sickening shock and thinking about it for a period of time, one does feel cheated.

In addition to feeling bad for the horse and the humans involved, you can't help but think: who couldn't he have been given a fair chance for the Triple Crown? The general public doesn't realize it, but he was so so much better than the likes of Smarty Jones, War Emblem, Real Quiet, Funny Cide, Point Given, Afleet Alex, etc., all of whom won 2 of the 3 TC races. These people have NO clue about how brilliantly talented this horse was. He was (in my opinion) even better on the Turf than on the dirt, they were thinking of sending him to the Arc in France.

As good as Bernardini was, I would have loved to have seen Barbaro blow him away in the stretch of the Preakness..And he would've.

Barbaro was a super special horse because of the fact he did make it as far as he did. Horses generally do not respond well coming out of anesthesia(Ex- Ruffian) But Barbaro seemed to beat the odds time and again. I think the feeling of being cheated comes from having followed Barabro for nearly 9months and to see light at the end of the tunnel only to find out that all of our hopes and wishes had died when he did.

Why feel cheated? Barbaro didn't die of a broken leg, he was euthanized due to complications of laminitis in three hooves and a deep subsolar abscess in the fourth. Barbaro could have sustained these same injuries having never broken his leg and having never been a racehorse. And how did Barbaro break his leg? Reports are the horse racing next to him, Brother Derek, 'fished-out' (swung his right foreleg wide when galloping) and caught Barbaro.

I don't feel cheated because Barbaro did not make the Triple Crown it would have been wonderful for the sport and for all the connection, but with the loss of Barbaro the industry has suffered a terrible sadden. Its terrible he had to pay with his life for our enjoyment and I hope he forgives us. he will be missed hopefully his full brother can step in his shoes.

Barbaro was a hero in the sense that he gave people something to believe in when things are sooooo bad everywhere else!I feel his fight for life gave people hope.As for this gaylover or whatever your id is-i am a song writer and have written and had songs recorded about our troops and 9/11,i would never put them in the background-they are heros, but there is always room for more and Barbaro was no doubt a hero!So take your 13 year old ***,and go back to mommies breast because its dinnertime!

for those who are around the track a lot its pretty commonplace to see horses break down, then have to be put down, it happens a lot when the weather goes bad and the surfaces get uneven (at least the old dirt tracks) and seemingly quite a bit at the cheaper 'fair' tracks which are generally run during summer at hard dry tracks used only a few weeks a year for racing, but that could also be attributed to the fitness of these animals as the purses are usually small and a lot of the horses running there dont run or arent competitive on the larger racing circuit...still, everytime we watch a race and a horse breaks down you can see horseplayers all over the room cringe, as if something happened to them or a friend...strange eh

Cheated??? They did everything they could to save that horse. They did more to save that horse than they would for most others. It is sad that the horse was suffering and had to be put down but they can honestly say they did everything in their power to save the horse. How does that make you feel cheated?

No one had any control or what happened it is a fact of life. It is normal to be saddened by things like this that happen, But get over it you can not control it and it will happen again.
