Golden retriever, they are awsome with kids, but so are german shephards (defianlty get them as puppy's though, they will get along better, be brought up with your children). Sain bernards are good but sometimes scare kids with there big size. (Hence why I say get them as puppy's. Go to a pet site, like www.petco.com type in a dogs type/name, information will pop up about the animal, and everything about them.

More dogs:

Any lab woudl be good
Austrailan shephard
colly (very playful, very cute, and loves kids same as the other ones above)
etc..

Don't be fooled into believing that a certain dog will not bite. Any dog with teeth can bite. Any dog. Period. There is no such thing as a dog that WILL NOT BITE. It all depends upon how you raise, socialize and train it.

Do you think you have enough time for a dog? You already have two kids and the 2 year-old must be a major handful right now. Just consider that if you get a puppy it will be exactly like having yet another child in your home for at least the next 2 years. Dogs are not born knowing human rules about where to potty, how to be quiet, how not to jump, how to greet people and other dogs, how to walk on a leash, how to settle down, how to play nicely, etc. You have to teach it all of these things, and many others. It is always a human's job to teach a dog. If it doesn't do what you like it's simply because it hasn't learned yet.

Obviously, this can be very time-consuming and, at times, frustrating. If you choose not to do the training and work when it's a puppy it is guaranteed to be a nuisance adult dog and will drive you nuts. And it will not be the dog's fault.

Please think seriously about adding a dog (puppy or adult) into your home. Enough dog's meet their death these days because they didn't live up to a human's expectations.

Golden Retrievers are my favorite dogs. I've had three already and I haven't found anything wrong with them yet.

To have the best golden I would make sure that they're AKC registered. The AKC registered ones don't have problems that the mutts.

There are two different types of goldens; a golden golden, and a copper penny. A copper penny is more of a showy dog and I prefer them over a regular golden.

They need lots of love and attention. They also make great hunting dogs and are very quiet and kind. They are great with kids.

For a calmer golden I would get an adult puppies take lots of patience.

Goldens are grest with very small children and are one of the most popular breeds.

I have to disagree with the last answer... I've personally been bitten by a beagle.
I've found the best dogs to be around younger kids are mixed breeds, usually over a year or two old. They've already passed the puppy stage, so are less likely to accidentally hurt a child by getting overexcited. Their personality is already developed. Try your local shelter or petfinder.com. When you find a dog you think you like, observe how he/she acts with your children. Is the dog startled easily, or overly sensitive to being touched? A 2 year old will think nothing of running up behind a dog and hugging him. A friend who used to breed dogs told me to try pinching the skin under the front leg of the dog - if the dog goes to snap at you, avoid it. If it looks at you like "how could you???", that's your dog.
If you're set on a purebred dog, go with something like a retriever or lab, who are known to be good family dogs.
Personally, my favorites are pitbulls - my 2 pitts are absolutely wonderful with my kids, even my disabled child. They'll take anything their owner does. You just have to be careful of the lineage of pitbulls, you have to look very carefully at the parents, or choose an adult or young dog that's already been proven to be good with children. They're the most loving, loyal dogs I've ever had.

There isn't really a breed that is automatically good around kids. You would have to ask about that before you get the dog. You could also bring your kids with you if you're going to get the dog and see how they acts around the kids (make sure the dog is behind a fence or restricted with a leash!). Little dogs are a good bet as long as your kids understand that they can't be rough with it. Little dogs can also be sharky, so make sure before bringing the dog home.

Labs and goldens are great, but they have a love for jumping on people. may knock the kids down quite a bit. it is just their love that brings them to do it. Beagles are excellent. Though they bark and howl a lot. They also love to escape their confines. Both are very good dogs and can be trained quite easily. I have had both and found their company with the kids very pleasant.

Small dogs have a bit of a reputation for being kind of volatile and yappy, but that's because a lot of people treat lapdogs as little babies and spoil them so they always want their way. If you get a small dog, preferably a puppy so you can train it an dit bond with all of you early, size won't really be an issue and they likely won't be too roug. I'm 13, and we have a bloodhound puppy (14 mos.) that basically beats the crap out of me because he's energetic and huge. Go small.

Mutts... they are the best because the are not temperamental. Preferably a mutt with retriever in it. Stay away from the smaller dogs, they are a bit feisty in their own way. I love my little Yorkie (mix) but she is not partial to kids. Any retriever whether pure of mix is a good dog.

Labrador Retrievers are one of the best kid dogs as well as trainability wise to. My Lab goes swimming with the kids in the summer and sledding with them in the winter. They play for hours and both my Lab and my boyfriends tolerate whatever the kids do to them.
