sorry but I need more info. give me the info and then I'll edit my answer if needs be.
First off. What avi. Is it divX or xvid? you can check by downloading this utility G spot
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
It will also tell you what codecs you need to play the file.
you probably have the sound codecs but not the video codecs. get this codec pack
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
(it has G spot in it)
Dump WM player and go for gom.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Video-Players/Gom-Player.shtml
if you get that you won't need the codec pack as the codecs are built in.
It will play whatever you throw at it. I have about 1500 avi films and know the problems for coding. gom usually will play it. The problem is that avi covers so many containers from div X to X.264.
Second. I presume you are trying to play them on the computer. If not then your DVD player might not play them even if it supposedly is avi compatible. This is due to the different coding processes. the only way round this is to convert the avi to DVD with a program such as Avi2dvd
http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html
finally. This is a long shot but if the avi hasn't got the first block of data then nothing will play it. However you wouldn't get sound either.
Hope this helps.

You're missing a plug in..... You can try viewing the videos with Quicktime (the latest release)..... Also, when I had that problem, I downlloaded this file and it worked fine. It won't hurt to get the codec anyway.... but Quicktime - the latest version - works pretty well.
