Black n White w/color process

Your procedure will depend if you are starting with a color or BW image.

If color, make a copy of the original layer on top… desaturate (do not make grayscale) the layer and use the “eraser” to erase the BW where it is you want color. Tedious but easy!

If BW, make a blank layer on top… use “brush” to paint (opaqe) your color on the blank layer over where you want it in the image… then use “multiply” as your blend mode and you will have the color in the BW.

If you don't have Photoshop, or know nothing about photography, there is a super-easy way to add color to black and white photos. You can buy pens to "color" in the areas on your black and white photos. Scan the color photos, change them to black and white with the scanner software and print them out. Then, get the photo color markers and have at it. The craft stores usually sell the markers, and they aren't that expensive.

There are some professional software programs out there for digital cameras that will allow you to render an image in both black and white and in color. You can then chosse the color elements you like and merge them with the black and white image.

You can hand tint or color the photograph. This takes more skill than working them in Photoshop. PS selective color can be accomplished several ways. I use a duplicate layer and quick mask, and keep adjusting until I get the effect I want.

Yes to what the guy above me said - Photoshop, layers, etc. But if you are not a computer person, you can by tints at an art supply store or a craft shop and hand tint your photos just like back in the old days. They are expensive though!
