To some extent, I think we all "zone out" while driving. We daydream or think about the upcoming work day while driving on "auto-pilot." An experienced driver on familiar turf can get away with this ... to some extent, but if you only have a few years experience or you're driving in an area you're not familiar with, zoning out will definitely increase your liklihood of having an accident.
Turn the radio down. Some minor chit-chat with your passenger is okay, but don't be having a full-blown conversation with them. Don't fiddle with the car stereo or try to reach something in the back seat unless you're at a red light. Don't keep your eyes fixed straight ahead. You need to check the mirrors, cross traffic, kids playing on the side of the road, etc. Be aware of what's going on around you.
You'll be safer and so will everyone else around you.
Ignore that idiot who said you need to take medicine. Medicine would only "work" if you took it from now on. No one should take anything "from now on" unless their life or quality of life was in danger. All medicines have side effects.

I think there's a lot of drivers out there like you and at some point, usually after a few at fault accidents, they realize they have to wake up and take this seriously before they kill themselves or hurt someone else. People have often marveled at my ability to stay awake all night pier fishing and drive home at dawn. My secret is that I take life seriously, failure is not an option, death is no mystery to me, it's the very end.

Stop driving and take the bus...
Seriously, if you know that you are zoning out and can't find a way to stop this, you shouldn't be on the road. Don't wait until you end up killing someone....

Stop driving. You could cause an accident and not only hurt yourself but hurt other people. If you are not responsble enough to drive without "zoning" out. Don't drive.

music is definatly a no. music just makes you more relaxed and tired. but if it is used the right way it can be helpful. I get off around 1am every morning and im always tired, but singing/freestyling to the music has helped. oh and dont use energy drinks, they just keep your nervers alert, that means you wont blink alot, but tecnically you are still asleep.
