Martial arts can be very helpful and relevant for health, stress-relief, self confidence, mental balance and so forth.

What you will discover (and should realize before starting), is that it's not all flashy and cool. Not only is doing flips not practical, but it's also very difficult to do unless you start out a young age.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but if you'd like to do martial arts for a long time, and i'd encourage you because of its benefits on many levels, then i'd focus more on what appeals to you in terms of practicality.

Like is there a school near you, or the teacher seems like an honest, and true practitioner, and that you can commit to training at least 2-3 times a week.

I know this doesn't totally answer your question, but i know when i started (Wing Chun) i wanted to do all the cool stuff, but the more you practice, you realize all the hard work is quite different!

You received some bad information there.

Flips increase your balance and body control when doing flips, not while you are walking, running, or doing anything that isn't flipping.

Flips require concentration and coordination, but again, only for doing the flip. They don't help with sparring and if you do a flip while sparring you are likely to catch a boot to the head.

You can take a style such as Wushu that teaches many aerial techniques. What too many instructors fail to teach their students is why they are doing these aerial techniques. The reason was because the Shaolin Monks often had to defend themselves against invaders on horseback. These techniques were intended to dismount the rider. So, unless you find yourself in a situation where a guy on a horse wants to hurt you, these techniques don't really have a practical application today.

Good luck to you.
