Bear with me, as this answer comes from me with a Christian viewpoint. I don't expect everyone to agree with what I will say, but thanks for your patience while you read it.
If there are Christians here who notice that I said something that you think is wrong... please e-mail me and let me know, and I will do my best to edit and fix any errors I made. Ok, my answer:
Comforter = Holy Spirit? Yes.
Why "he"? Same reason as using "He" for God in the Bible, I would imagine, in spite of there being lots of references to God as having feminine qualities too, like the way He protects us like a mother hen.
The "new thing" is the new life inside each believer. The Holy Spirit has regenerative work to do in each of us, if I am not mistaken. People follow laws for many reasons: to follow the teaching of their parents... to avoid punishment for lawbreaking... to gain in some way from following the laws... to be a citizen of good reputation in their community... to competitively try to be "better than" other people. But the Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out... making us hate sin because it hurts and separates us from God... and making us love the people around us, no matter what they have done wrong... making us judge ourselves alone, and to judge ourself according to the standards Jesus set. We will always fall short. But there is where the Holy Spirit comes in.
Jesus had to leave before the Holy Spirit would come because pre-Jesus, the Holy Spirit made some random appearances to individual men/women, but the Holy Spirit did not live WITHIN men. God is holy, and He does not dwell with sin -- this is why the Holy Spirit did not live within men prior to Jesus.
During the time Jesus was on this earth, He had the fullness of the Holy Spirit living inside Himself because His mission as far as earthly life, was to experience what we go through, to be tempted just like we are, and to model what a "Spirit-filled life" should be like. Based on His example, a Spirit-filled life focuses on two things: loving God with all you've got in you... and loving every other person on this earth just as much as you love yourself (even people who would say they are your worst enemies, even people who hurt you). It involves having a close relationship with God as if He is our best friend (He is!), and wishing other people can have a close relationship with God too. So for us, the "Spirit-filled life" also involves carrying the gospel message of Jesus to other people, because if we love them, we will want them to have eternal life with God in Heaven -- and without Jesus, they simply cannot. Therefore, love for God and love for them leads us to share Jesus.
One big part of the Spirit-filled life of Jesus was miracles. Jesus made a promise that after He left this earth, His disciples would perform great miracles. He stated that He had only done His miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit, while He was on this earth... and, that same Holy Spirit power would be the way His disciples would perform their miracles, only by the power of the Holy Spirit living inside them.
Prior to Jesus's death on the cross and resurrection from the dead, the people of God had made sacrifices to atone for their sin. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice. He died for once and for all. After Jesus's resurrection, He left this earth and went back to heaven. At that point, His sacrifice of His own life atoned for the sin of all people who would believe in Jesus as the only begotten Son of God, the Savior of the world, the way, the truth, and the life -- the only way to God.
After Jesus left this earth and went back to heaven, the Holy Spirit could come and live within men who believed in Jesus that way. He (the Holy Spirit) could now do this, because Jesus's death on the cross, resurrection from the dead, and his shed blood which was for our atonement and the remission of our sins... had served its purpose in washing the believers of Jesus clean from sin. He died for all people, and He said so. He died for people of every country, race, sex, religion, to save them from the sin which so viciously strangles them. According to my faith, this includes both you and me as equals. All we need to do is turn from sin and accept Jesus for who He is: a Savior who is alive and well today, as He was from before the beginning of time.
The Holy Spirit would never dwell in a filthy sinful vessel... and prior to Jesus, no matter how sinless a person tried to be... people were all sinners. It is still the same today in one way... all are sinners... falling short of the glory of God. BUT, now that Jesus has died to cleanse us from all the sin... our faith in Him causes us to be clean so that the Holy Spirit can dwell in us too.
We can't "clean up our act." We can't "reach" God by acts of goodness or kindness. We are not "clean" because we are perfect. We are not "clean" because we follow the law 200%. We are not "clean" because we are better than anyone else out there. We are not "clean" because our religion is superior to anyone else's.
We are simply cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ, which was the only sacrifice worthy to cleanse people from sin for once and for all. To get the cleansing, simply accept the gospel of Jesus. Freely given. Yoke easy. Burden light.
Concerning Muhammad... the below I am copying from a previously asked question which said something sort of like,"Is Muhammad another messenger from God, just like Jesus?" The below was the main part of my response, modified a tiny bit so that it makes sense in the context of the current question (I hope):
Jesus said that His Gospel would be preached to all nations, and then the end would come, and He Himself would return (Matthew 24:3-14).
It would be no problem IF the "other Messenger" (Muhammad) was truly proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But the problem is, that the "other Messenger" you are speaking of, did not preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not the truth about it. The "other Messenger," when he spoke of Jesus, spoke lies. Jesus Himself prophesied that this would happen, that False Messengers would arise with lies. And this "other Messenger" is an example of that.
Most of the lies I have run across are in The Qur'an's Surah 3 and Surah 4. They contradict the truths which Jesus Himself taught about His own Sonship, which is a fundamental element of His Gospel. (The Qur'an, Surah 4:171, in part states: "Allah is only One God. Far is it removed from His transcendent majesty that He should have a son.")
One lie is in Surah 4:157, where it is said that Jesus was not indeed crucified, but that people were misled concerning His death. This is yet another lie, because the Qur'an purports Jesus as a Messenger from God, yet here again, distorts the truth which Jesus Himself proclaimed about His own death and resurrection.
There are a couple of more lies I would like to find and quote here. I hope that in the span of the next two days I am able to do so, and edit my answer so that it contains all of those which I know about. Because all of these lies together, constitute a butchering of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. (Therefore, the "other Messenger" is revealed to me as a False Messenger, and not a Messenger of Truth on the continuum of God's revelation to mankind.)
These are scary times for those who turn away from the truth. Jesus stated in the Holy Bible, John 14:6: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." The "other Messenger" (Muhammad) has claimed that Jesus was a valid Messenger, yet Muhammad has torn apart even the truth which Jesus proclaimed.
It is almost like Muhammad was saying: "This Jesus, He was a True Messenger from Allah -- But Be Warned: Do Not believe Anything He said!!"... which is a self-contradictory statement. I want to encourage all people to seek truth, and not fall prey to books that are full of contradictions of truth.
Jesus IS the way, the truth, and the life. Period.
The Holy Spirit regenerates us who believe in Jesus. Re-connects us to God. Acts as our Counselor, Comforter, and Helper.
There is one other interesting thing it says about the Holy Ghost/Spirit... it is below from the Holy Bible's Book of John, Chapter 5... see especially verse 7 and 8... in which, as I recall, the "Word" it speaks of, is Jesus Christ. In other verses (I don't have time to go look those up) it says regarding Jesus: "the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us"... and that's all I can remember at this particular time.
1 John 5:5-13
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
I am pretty tired right now, and I hope this all makes sense somewhat. I will review my post tomorrow and modify it as needed. For tonight, this is the best I can do -- if there seem to be parts of what I wrote where you go "Huh??"... please e-mail me so I will realize there was a problem. (I mean that for all who read my answer.)
I hope this helps.

The Holy Spirit is indeed a Person, not an 'it'. And He DID come to the Apostles, some 50 days after the Ascention. He is indeed the Comforter, as He comforted and strengthened them for their Mission. Until He appeared, they were huddled in fear in the Upper Room. The 'new thing' was Christianity, the movement that began with those few people, and grew to fill the earth.
1-John chapter 14 verse 16:
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever."
Is Mohammed still with us? Where?

After the Ascension of Jesus the Holy Spirit would come to enable the young church to grow and by bestowing the gifts needed to convince people of the truth concerning Christ, and would also comfort all who believed in times of persecution etc.

Also Spirit of Peace and Spirit of Prayer. As for the girl who mentioned the Prophet David, the Holy Spirit did come to earth at rare times before Christ's life, death, resurrection and ascension. He came to the Holy Prophets of old...and one of those was the Prophet David. After Christ, the Holy Spirit is available to all of us. How extraordinarily fortunate we are. As Christ said, there were many who lived and died hoping for what we have... Plus, she seems to forget that the Prophet David, because of his indiscretions, gives us the template for repentance for all time.

Muhammad claimed to be a prophet of God, not a comforter. There is a world of difference beteen comforting and giving rules that have no wiggle room.

** if you want to say Holy spirit please first read the whole text
It is mentioned in the book of Isaiah chapter 29 verse 12:
"And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned."
Does it ring a bell???
***********************
OR
1-John chapter 14 verse 16:
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever."
2-Gospel of John chapter 15 verse 26:
"But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which
proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me"
3-Gospel of John chapter 16 verse 7:
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not
come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you".
**Some Christians say that the Comforter mentioned in these prophecies refers to the Holy Sprit. They fail to realise
that the prophecy clearly says that only if Jesus (pbuh) departs will the Comforter come. The Bible states that the
Holy Spirit was already present on earth before and during the time of Jesus (pbuh), in the womb of Elizabeth, and again when Jesus (pbuh) was being baptised, etc.
whereas the Bible says "....for if I go not away, the Comforter will not" so the comforter WILL NOT COME even just temporarily when Jesus is on earth
So according to 3-Gospel of John chapter 16 verse 7, the comforter cant be Holy Spirit .
***********************
Gospel of John chapter 16 verse 12-14:
"I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is
come, he will guide you unto all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me".

When I was little my sister told me that my blankets would come alive and eat me. I swear when I moved and my goose down comforter tightened around my neck. I did not use it again for 2 weeks. I guess my sister saw it in the bible.
