It says that Cain has a mark that anyone FINDING him will know not to kill him. What sort of mark was this?

Obviously it was a mark so anyone that see's him coming will notice the difference that it is Cain.

My mother believes that this mark was a color change, possibly black. being the first black man was Cain. Is that possible?

the bible does not say what the sign for cain was. and doesn't say it was placed on his person in anyway. The sign likely consisted of a solemn decree itself, known and observed by others, Gen 4: 10-15,, compare vs. 24 where the decree is referred to by lamech.

he was then sent into banishment.

First of all, it's important to remember that this story is part of the cluster of myth stories that tell about the Beginning (the Big Bang theory as created by the story tellers of about three thousand BC, if you will). One sign of such a story is clearly evident here: Cain pleads with God for mercy, since he knows that others when they find him will try to kill him, just as he killed his brother. Those "others" indicate a world different from that described in Genesis; there are already other folks around who don't care for Cain that much, when, if the literal story were true, there could not be anybody else, or if there were, those others would be brothers and sisters of Cain. However, it's not a problem, since the story is making no effort to be consistent. It is teaching a lesson, not recounting history as we know it today. The text does not tell what the mark was, so we can't even guess, except to say that it was given as a visible sign that anyone would immediately understand, and that it was given as an act of mercy to the world's first murderer. Even to a murderer there is the potential of mercy. That's a powerful lesson -- one that we still don't seem to "get."

Many things are possible, and some people teach that Cain was a black person.
Then they have a reason not to like blacks.

Truth is, the Bible does not say.
Researching the Bible, you can see where Cain settled. Guess those people didn't have a problem with it. Maybe the mark was only meant for God's "people" to be able to tell.

The Bible doesn't say. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. The Bible only says that people would know by seeing the mark, that they were not to kill Cain.

Some people say he was given horns, some say it was a tattoo or a brand, some say it was leprosy. The real issue is that he was given a mark so noone would kill him, but at the time, according to the bible, the only people on earth were his parents. As his parents wouldn't be likely to kill him, it shows the bible is inconsistent, or has been edited, or is lying.

It could be, but I don't believe that. Maybe it was like a birth mark. I believe if it had been a color change, then it would be "common knowledge".

The "mark" was the number on his membership card marking him as a member of the Republikan Party (GOP).

He was cursed with the color of black. That is how the race came into existence.
