this is a HUGE question. I had one baby in a birth ccenter and one at home...and although im nearing 40 IF i have another child...i will do it at home.... You have to search long and hard to find a hospital that will 'let' you labor the way you want to. Most hospitals DO NOT have tubs and birth balls...i know some hospitals that wont even allow labor doulas, wont allow Mom to move around during labor and get into a more comfortable birthing position. All that being said....every state has different laws regarding home births and not that you COULDNT do it...but you might have a tough time finding a midwife who does home births....You need to research and interview BOTH sides of this coin...go for a tour of 3 different hospitals...go for an interview with a few different midwives....this is the best way to get to see what ALL your options are and then you can best decide for YOURSELF...Good Luck!

I am a nurse and have to say I think the hospital is best. Quite a few complications during birth give no warning. I will never give birth without a dr present because it makes me feel more relaxed and safe knowing there is a qualified medical professional that can do what needs to be done without taking precious moments driving to the hospital.
Now that being said.... there are great midwives that can do a home delivery. Our hospital doesn't do a water birth and I think that would help ALOT!
It is a very personal decision and I'm sure what ever you decide will be the right decision for you.

I don't think there is any proof that hospitals are better. Hospitals were orginally a place for the sick or a place to go and die. As long as you are having a normal healthy pregnancy and have a good experienced midwife or doctor and a back up plan just in case something does go wrong, try a home birth.

For me, home was definately the best place to give birth.
First delivery was in hospital and the way I was treated was so bad I vowed never to go back.
Babies 2, 3 and 4 all born at home, totally straightforward very fast labours.
Baby #5 born at hospital as we had moved and home wasn't an option, again an awful experience, and will be hiring a private midwife for home delivery of baby #6.

I would definately say hospital. You never know when something could go wrong. Its just a lot safer to be at the hospital. Where they have all the equipment in case of an emergency. I would also think that a hospital would be more sanitary than a home.

I know people with good home birth experiences, but I think if you had a good midwife or doctor and a mapped out birthplan you can do most of those things at the hospital. Many have big tubs, those big balls, you CAN be in a position other then on your back- squatting is recommended.

What about another option? Go to a birth center. The infant mortality rate is half that of the hospital and the cescarean rate is much lower. I have had 4 kids, none of them at the hospital. I had three in the birth center, and one in the car.

Although doing this at home is a lot cheaper, in my opinion the hospital would be your best choice. If the baby would get into distress, or something else would happen (God forbid), then at least the hospital personnel will be able to recognize things early and get treatment started. It could be a matter of life or death......for both of you.

Home. IF you prefer a gentle, natural and safer delivery.
I say safer for 2 reasons. 1) its commom knowelege that hospitals are filled with germs & disease; much more so than your home. 2) The unessarey invasive action that is taken during a hospital birth puts a mother and her child at much more risk than delivering at home
However, if you want pain meds and lots of unnecessary interference then go to the hospital.

hospital is safest, if anything goes wrong then there are trained nurses and doctor there to help. i know at home you would have a midwife or someone to help but the hospital is still the safest place. good luck!
