Can you change the drag on a fly rod? If so how. And there is a button on the left side in the middle of the reel what is it for?

The button on the left side is for dis-engaging the spool from the reel.

If there is a knob on the other side of the reel, it is for drag control.
Some fly reels are built without a drag control and employ what is known as a click drag. You control the fight of the fish with your hand, "palming" the reel to add drag manually.

It's possible, but make sure you didn't accidentally purchase a left-handed reel and then mount it on the rod as a right-hand configuration. Holding the rod with the reel hanging below, the line should be coming off the bottom of the reel. If this is not the case, and you do not have a left-handed reel, I would either return it to Bass Pro or strip off the line and re-spool.

a fly rod reel is not a "reel", rather a line holder. To "reel" in a fish you keep pressure with your index finger and pull on the string with your other hand. After fish is landed, then you reel in your line.
