two ways, either start your flight in an aircraft that has engines and fly up to a certain altitude, or press the slew mode "y" key and then press f1-f4 to change your altitude, using the arrow keys on your keyboard or the yoke on your joystick, you can also change the direction of your aircraft. the learning centre within Flight Simulator 2004 has an article on how to fly gliders. hope this helps.

Since it's a Microsoft program, did you ever consider the help feature?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;837883 is the page.

And it says: Method 1: Use slew mode
1. Start Microsoft Flight Simulator.
2. When you are in the cockpit, press Y to start slew mode.
3. Use the slew commands to change the position, the direction, the location, or the altitude of the aircraft.

The F3 key will slew the aircraft straight up.
4. Press Y to turn off slew mode.

Method 2: Start your flight in a powered aircraft
1. Start Flight Simulator.
2. When you are in the cockpit, on the Aircraft menu, click Select Aircraft. Verify that your aircraft has an engine to provide power for takeoff.

Note You may have to press ALT to display the File menu.
3. Start your flight, and then climb to altitude.
4. On the Aircraft menu, click Select Aircraft.
5. Under Aircraft manufacturer, click Schweitzer.
6. Under Aircraft model, verify that 2-32 Sailplane is selected, and then click OK.

You need to push the "Slew" button which will make you able to place the plane anywhere. Push the "y" button to activate it first. Then you can use the throttle buttons, f1-f4, to go up or down, and you elevators and ailerons to move forward, back, left or right. Then push y again to fly. Good luck.
