I'm a juvenile probation officer, and I deal with public defenders all the time since our juveniles can get one appointed just by asking, regardless of family income.
I think these men and women really do a great job for the kids, even though the kids and their families aren't paying for the lawyer. They put effort into their defense, and they do a good job. There's only one of our public defenders that I wouldn't want to hire if I needed an attorney. The rest of our PDs are good at their jobs.

My general impression is that public defenders don't always do the best job for the client but I am sure there are some excellent public defenders who do a great job.

The truth of the matter is that most of them have such a tremendous caseload, that they will not adequetly be able to defend you properly, other than to see that you are not being steamrolled in court. They will not spend too much time investigating your case, because they just don't have the time, nor resourses. My adivice to you is, if you are involved in a criminal case, get your own lawyer.

I work in the criminal justice system and like any other profession there are some very good PD's out there as well as some very bad ones. I have seen some PD's go above and beyond the proverbial call of duty while others don't even know their client's name.

I cannot respect a person who would defend someone who they know is guilty. That being said, I find public defenders to be as lacking of morals and ethics as I find the criminals.

i have to say the majority seem to be playing for the other side anyway and/or their caseloads are so overloaded that they just don't have the time to give it their all. but once in a while there will come along that one that is truly in his/her element and some defendant lucks out.

One word "WORTHLESS!" They don't defend a client, they cut deals, never mind that the client just might just be Innocent of the charges.
