My son is 9 years old and he had one of his back teeth capped with a silver cap. He complained about it hurting him last night but I thought he would feel better today. He told me this morning it felt funny so I looked at it and the gum at the back of his mouth..this is the last tooth next to his gum is swollen. Is this normal?

Hi, I don't think it's normal to start feeling pain after the silver cap. Either there's an excess of the material used in that cap and it went down his gumline or the 2nd molar is trying to come out... but he's only 9 (normal age to have this tooth is 11-13). The cap's margin design and cement on marginal seal must be checked again. Take your son back to the dentist to see if there's something under his gumline. A swollen gumline is the only way for gingival tissue to let the body "know" something "doesn't belong here".
An X-ray might be helpful too. Good luck!

Yes, but if motrin does not help, then call the dentist first thing on monday. The gums are adjusting to the cap, they will have to fit around the base of it. It should heal itself within a few days.
