A new Operating System from Microsoft that requires you to spend a bunch of money on new hardware so the screen looks pretty. If you don't need all the bells and whistles (e.g. the Aero interface which is just eye candy) you can get Windows Vista Home PREMIUM for the features and have the new security stuff integrated in the new OS. The security measures are better than XP SP2b however, most sources on the internet say to wait until May 2007 (when the beta testing period is over) before you buy. I tend to agree. MS keeps putting out crap OSes and talks about "trustworthy" computing, but if they would secure it from the beginning and not give an inch, all the hackers couldn't take a mile when they find the holes in the code (that appear to be intentionally inserted).

It's the next generation of the Microsoft Windows Operating system, in the same way Windows '95 replaced Windows 3.0, or Windows 98 replaced Windows '95, or Windows ME replaced Windows '98, or (finally) how Windows XP replaced Windows ME, etc.
The main differences between earlier versions of Windows and Windows Vista (that I recall from when I could still be bothered to read about it) is:
1) They've actually bothered to make Security a priority from the word go, rather than an after-thought in updates after launch
2) Apparently you'll be able to use USB flashdrives to give your computer a RAM boost + use as much RAM memory on your motherboard as you can fit in (I think the original version of XP before they brought out the 64bit version had a limit of 1GB).
3) They've made speech-recognition features more advanced (see recent news stories about the security loophole that's apparently caused)
4) just look it up on Microsoft's website, it'll be quicker

Windows Vista is the newest Operating System of the Windows Family from Microsoft. It contains 4 versions from Basic to Premium. This version is much more graphical than XP and some consider it the "Best". but to operate it you need a VERY powerful computer, to run Premium at its best you need 15GB hard drive to install it, 1GB memory for smooth running, A graphics card with 256MB Video Memory (nVidia or GeForce with 3D Acceleration recommended). Plus some more powerful equipment.
