i think that the major cause of single parent families lies down to the basics: COMMUNICATION.
why is that? - because in most cases this kinds of issues aren't talked about BEFORE you have children or even get married. When ALL things should be discussed with your partnet even when dating - at least once the relationship seems to be heading in the more serious direction.
People need to realize that NOT everyone is going to want the same things they want. Let me give you an example of some important things to consider in a conversation with the potential father of your child(ren):
1. Do they even want any kids? - some people don't want any! but sometimes they (meaning mostly the woman) think that by getting pregnant their husband will HAVE to love that child once he/she is here.... and sadly... that's not always the case.
2. How many kids do they want? - if you are thinking 1-2 kids but your husband wants to beat his mom's record by having 12 children... you might have a problem!
3. RELIGION - that's a hard one! what religion if any should be baby grow up around... ouch... this is a hard one!
4. Ways to dicipline children. Both partners need to agree in the ways their children are going to be diciplined. It not only makes pareting 20x easier... it removes all confussion that the kids might get from mixed messages such as mom says no tv but dad says it's ok until bedtime.
5. Even the little things.... such as your partner's views of boys vs girls..... how does he view boys who like to play with dolls or play dress up? stereotypes are a HUGE barrier sometimes! all the way to things you would like to expose your child to or avoid - rated r movies, bad language, music, food (for those picky eaters!), drinking, smoking, sleep overs, etc.
6. People may also want to talk about the sexual prefrence of their child.... what if your partner is homophobic and your son is gay??? is he going to shame, humilliate and reject your son?

yeah..... try talking about those kinds of things! - not to mention the social-economic factors tied into single parent families, stereotypes, myths, etc.
good luck! =)

Divorce. Some people can't get around it. My parents divorced when I was 10. My dad has paranoid schitzophrenia and we couldn't deal with it anymore.

I'd look up modern values etc. It has to do with people being not so religious, or not believing in marriage. Poor socioeconomic background etc. good luck.

There is NO good answer to this question. Things happen and there are way too many reasons to list.
