First of all, you can't lead a stress-free life if you live on planet earth, but you sure as hell can't reduce the stress.
Meditation, particularly Zen, is one way of relieving yourself from stress.
Avoiding procrastination in carrying out everyday tasks is another way to prevent stress.
Here's a list of techniques to help you reduce stress (from wikipedia):
self-understanding (e.g. self-identification as a Type A or as a Type B personality)
cognitive therapy
self-management (e.g. becoming better-organized)
conflict resolution
positive attitude
self-talk
autogenic training
breathing
progressive relaxation
masturbation
meditation
exercise
diet
rest
stress balls
therapeutic massage
laughter
I suggest you read this article on wikipedia:

An antidepressant is the only way to prevent your mind from racing and constantly thinking/worrying. Nothing else works. I tried everything: meditation, prayer, alternative meds. Nothing worked but medication.

i ts something ive worked out myself so it might sound a bit strange. basic jist is in a situation which causes you stress instead of having most of your energy in your head bring it down more to the centre of your body and just have no thoughts. Also dont let people get to you and try not to worry about anything.

Try meditaing, it can block out any pain if you meditate correctly, and also try buddhism. Stress is made for a reason, but mediation gives you complete control over your body and senses, you master yourself, not your unconcious using you.
Yoga relieves stress, it dones't allow you to control yourself.

Stress-free? I don't know what that would look like, but it sounds boring. As for controlling your mind, I've found meditation, particularly Buddhism to be very valuable to me. Hope it's useful to you.
