A good example of foot in the mouth would be if you started ranting about how disgusting a restaurant was to an acquantance and then they said I am sorry to hear that its my dad's restaurant.
Then you would say ok let me just put my foot in my mouth now. Its usually saying something you don't realize is wrong to an audience that you don't know very well

If you put your foot in your mouth - you don't do so literally - it just means you have said something you regret (usually something inappropriate at the wrong time).
