I was wondering...... On my ASVAB I scored an overall 77 (or right around there) and in electronics I scored around an 87. I told my recruiter before the tests how I really wanted to do computers or electronics and with a score that well, you think I would be signed into the Electrical Aptitude area, but I was still signed into the DEP under the General Aptitude area. Is this some kind of shimmy to get me to do some job that is going to have nothing to do with what I was hoping to do? I would hate to waste 3 years of college, and over 20 Computer certifications to flip burgers or something..

Thanks

One thing I should mention, my recruiter said there are NO guaranteed jobs which i was fine with. Did anyone else ever get recruited into the "General Aptitude" area? Did you end up doing something you were interested in? Thanks

Hey MattF.. You should email me..... I wanted to talk about a few things...

AT MEPS I signed up for Electrical and General Aptitude as well as about 10 jobs in Electrical ... They said though they can't promise a job... When I got home from MEPS the recruiter called and said I leave on May 1 in the General Aptitude area.

When do you leave to basic?

Military members do not "flip burgers," we have contractors to do that kind of work. You are coming in at a bad time to get into Communications Squadrons, however, as manning cuts are laying pretty heavily into the Comm Career fields. However, most of the time, alot of people don't even think to request Comm as a specialty code, so there's still a pretty decent chance of getting Comm. The main thing that will tell what your job will be is after you submit your request for an AFSC and get told what it will be, the ASVAB is just used as special indicator for certain career fields.

Klechak ... By "DEP," you mean delayed entry program, right? Well, does that necessarily mean the recruiter is trying to scam you? Is there not a part of the process where you:

1 - Specify your field of interest
2 - You take their test battery and the Air Force indicates what school you're qualified for.
3 - Based on your test results, you make a choice
4 - The Air Force promises to send you to the school of your choice and states such in the contract.

Is that not how it's supposed to happen? If not, it seems there's a loophole somewhere.

Ask questions and if you don't feel 100% comfortable, ask more questions politely. If you're still not 100% certain, tell them why you're uncomfortable, say "Thanks for your help," and leave, period. If they haven't got the courtesy to plainly show what they're promising, then they may not deserve your willingness to serve.

By the way ... I am NOT anti-military. But something may be wrong with the way this person's enlistment is being processed.

Here's the deal. The job of a recruiter is to SELL you on the branch you are interested in joining. The career counselor will SELL you the specific job for that branch of service. Remember that the counselor get a list of open jobs needed by that branch and his job is to SELL you on those needed vacancies. If you did not what that certain job, you should have told him to keep looking, or declined the offer. When you step away from the computer, you'll be amazed at what the counselor can find for you.

Man, i do think you got scammed there, i'm in the DEP for the Air Force and i got that area of interest. I'm enlisted for mechanics. The contract that we sign at meps is for the job that we are guaranteed. Your recruiter is doing something or told you false information. Go into his office one day and ask him whats up. tell him that another guy in the DEP for the Air Force got his placement for his highest score, tell him that if you don't get the job your looking for you are going to bug him everyday until something comes up for that job interest. Thats what i told my recruiter and he said, the contract can be legally voided if my job area is not given to me. Try it and see what he/she says. Good Luck.

You will be amazed what will open it up for you if you tell your recruiter you want out of the DEP. Tell them you want out if you can't have the job you want.
