I bought a gorgeous dress from Filene's Basement and needs a lot of alterations. Should I get the dress dry cleaned after it's altered to remove any finger print oils or other dirty bits if the dress is not going to be worn for over a year? Or should I just get it dry cleaned a month before it is worn. Also are there places that store wedding dresses or is it okay to just store it in your closet?

You may want to have it cleaned since it's been in sotrage for so long. If you do store your dress at home, you should wrap it in white cotton sheets so it can still breathe. Plastic prevents air flow

I would suggest that you dry clean it once this round on alterations are done. But also plan on having it re-fitted closer to your date, so it looks perfect on you. After that you will need to get it dry cleaned again. The only reason I would suggest dry cleaning it now instead of waiting until all of the alterations are done and just doing it once, is that you don't want to let any little things that are easy to get out now set and become stains. As far as storage, if you have a big enough closet where the dress will have room, and if you have a long/big enough garment bag, you should be fine. Otherwise, I would try asking the place you bought it or had it altered if they will store it until closer to the date, a lot of them will, or they may be able to recommend some place.

If you put a plastic bag over it I think it will stay fine in your closet. Also I think you should dry clean it after the alterations because it may get dirty during the progress, finger stains and all that.I hope you have a beautiful wedding!

one thing is i would wait to get it altered til a bit closer to wearing time, you don't know how you body might change in 6 months etc.. you can get it dry cleaned and then dry clean again because hanging anywhere home or otherwise it may get a bit of dust on it and a crease from overlapping material. you can keep it at home in a special bag or dress container if you so wish.
