I ususally send an e-mail - saves a lot of energy and trouble. Just do not forget to always mention that they are "amazing, rare, intelligent" people who "surely deserve to be appreciated in full" and who "deserve the very best" (that you can not give because you are burnt out/emotionally unavailable/career-focused at the moment). Normally works.

plan out wat u want to say but dont get tounge tied because i did once and i was gonna say that
"its not that I dont like u i just dont think right now is the best time for me to have a BF"
BUT
it came out as "its not that i dont want a BF just that I dont like u".
So dont make the same mistake I did. Just tell him the truth.
