Sometimes that is the only alternative left to them. Small countries or factions don't necearrily have to power to make people sit and negotiate a solution. It is sometimes easier to fight and/or kill the opposing side and then take over as the new power. This will increase the size of their force and potrentially make them stronger. So they think. Some countries have been at war so long that they don't really remember the initial cause. It is very difficult to get a radical to change their mind by talking.

Because, at heart, we're still animals. We fight over territory, food, and the rest just like any animal does. And, there are too many of us so space constraints aren't helping.
We are human beings, but still animals. And most of us behave like it.

same reason as animals in the jungle; lack of sufficient natural resources. Poor countries want more and rich countries want to keep what they have or get more.
