What to do when your family members spend all their free time in front a TV and when you suggest you spend some time together often reply with invitation to watching TV with them??! I am frustrated how much time is being wasted on some impersonal TV crap, but it is too late to change two grown up adults. Is there an explanation why they need this stupid TV all the time and how not to get angry with this situation?

In my own house we sold a TV and only keep a DVD player for movies and we watch/read news online, but when I am visiting parents, and they watch their huge TV... I get very upset every time!

I feel ya sistah. I live a couple states away from my family. They never visit and often complain that I don't visit them.

When I do, its dinner and a few minutes of convo before tv. Pisses me off. I can watch tv at home.

I don't have tv, either. I have a dvd player and a PS2. When you come visit me, you sit around and talk, but the truth is my friends and I have something to talk about.

The members of my family are fairly boring ppl. They don't really have much to discuss and aren't very aware of much either. I think trying to talk to me is boring to them b/c they aren't aware of things like current events or science or really anything that isn't on a top 40 radio station or prime time tv. Ppl are mentally lazy these days. They just want to go do their job, get stuff at MalWart and turn on the tv to turn off their brain.

Your family is like that and probably doesn't understand why you would burden yourself by not joining them.

The only solution I've ever found is board or card games. Easy ones, of course, remember that they don't want to have to think too much and learn new ones.

Watching tv together is a safe activity, there are no arguments, no emotional output required, everyone just sits there.

If your really concerned, talk to your family, tell them its important that you do family things together, without the tv.

No, there's not a thing to do. To say otherwise would be rude. Have them to your house for meals.
