I know that the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984. states that any road where the street lamps are less than 200 yds apart is classed as a built up area and automatically has a 30mph speed limit

Yes, you can be sure that there is a specification or a code that dictates how far, how high, high wide, how deep, what material, what color, what type/color of paint, how it's mounted, power requirements, electrical wiring gauge, light intensity, etc. etc.
Check with your local City Engineering Dept. or Residential Building Code Dept. in your local Government.
(Tip: I'd bet someone at your local Home Depot could tell you)

If there isn't then there should be, there should also be a law against these moving lamp posts, there is one half way to my house from the pub, it watches for me coming home every night and jumps out in front of me! Not a lot of sympathy from my wife either, I think she may have trained it?

what kind of lamp post? if you are talking about the decorative type in someone's yard, then it has to be beyond the easement. these are usually 10 feet. sometimes less.check with your building code dept. if you are talking about the streetlight post, then i have seen these right to the edge of the street.

I'm sure there is somewhere, along with all the other stupid laws we have, and have you notice they never remove any of them just keep adding more.

Check with your local council before buying and installing your own. My neighbour forgot to do this, and was forced to take his down. mind you, it was a 15-ft effigy of a phallus.
