Split ends naturally occur as hair encounters objects and rubs against them. Dryness can also cause split ends. Keeping hair moisturized and preventing excess rubbing on things like clothes and sheets can minimize split ends. The best thing to do to prevent them is to get hair trimmed regularly.

Split ends will happen to almost anyone who goes too long between trims, but are more likely to develop in dry or brittle hair, and typical causes of damage include vigorous brushing, brushing hair when it is still wet, coloring and perming which make hair weak, and heat appliances. The intense heat causes a strand of hair to crack at the tip and split vertically up the shaft, thereby getting the name “split ends”.
To prevent:-
1. Do not overdo hairstyling(Heat application)
2. Cut down on chemicals
3. Be gentle with your hair. Remember that wet hair is more vulnerable to damage, so do not brush your hair when it is wet. Avoid overbrushing, as brushing in itself causes stress to the hair, leading to split ends. When you do brush your hair, use a hairbrush with soft, even bristles or a wide-toothed comb. Avoid nylon bristles at all costs.
4. Use the right accessories. When using hair accessories such as colorful hairpins and bands, make sure they are not too harsh for your hair. Use hairpins with smooth ends. Sharp hairpin ends can tear at the hair strands when you unpin them. Additionally, avoid using rubber bands to tie your hair. Instead, do up your ponytail with a soft scrunchie or other fabric elastic band.
5. Moisturize.
6. Schedule an appointment. Make an appointment with your trusted hairdresser every four to six weeks to trim off dry and brittle ends. Trimming your hair regularly can prevent the formation of split ends or get rid of those that are already there.
Remember that split ends cannot be repaired. The only solution is to cut them off completely. It is essential to maintain a very strict haircare regimen to prevent future occurrences of split ends.

You get split ends by pulling through your hair instead of working a knot out. Use cream rinse after washing. Blot dry hair, then comb through and style as normal.

Brushing to roughly and heat can damage it. To slow the proccess ease out the tangles in your hair and don't use too much heat like blow dryers and straightners. When you get split ends trim them off before it damages you rhair too much.

I don't know how you can prevent them, but they usually happen when two people can no longer get along.
