Hi, just wanted to help out the woman asking about preventing her cat from kneading on her quilt. I completely forgot about the little tips veterinarians and pet catalogs sell for cats claws.
You clip the cats claws, be careful of the "quick" or the cat will bleed, then place the tips on the cat's claws. This will help to prevent damage to your belongings, without causing the cat any undue stress. He will still be able to knead, scratch, etc., without harm.

I have to clip my cats claws every 2weeks.I also offer them a big card board scratching pad with cat-nip on it to keep them away from my furniture.The card board has to be replaced when really scratched for a while. But fabric scratch pads sometimes encourage cats to scratch furniture because they can't tell the difference. If their scratching the seat of your couch you could cover it for a time with an old blanket to deter the cats and protect from more scratches. a lot of times when a favorite scratching place is altered even by a little, it can make the cat find a new place. If you have a scratcher handy this could create a new habit.

When my kitty was being spayed, they clipped her claws. When she came home she tried to climb her climby thing, jumped up there and splat fell right down. i guess they clipped them too well. The poor cat was not used to having no grippers.
