I have just consulted my copy of Debrett's Guide to Table Manners - they say that you should place your teeth on the side plate with the teeth facing inwards so as not to frighten young children and gentlewomen.

Well the fact is you can do whatever you want. However, if you're concerned about the reactions of other people I recommend the following.

- buy a plastic (non-see-thru) container that has a sponge inside.
- Keep this in your purse.
- You can moisten the sponge and place your teeth in it when out in public.
- inside the container, no one will see your teeth. So it won't matter if you leave the container on the table.

Think of it like a dental retainer and it's case. This way, no one gets grossed out by seeing the teeth while their eating.

Finally, remember the fact that people get grossed out about it has nothing to do with you. Covering the teeth is considerate and will help you to avoid the stares.

Best of luck to you.

I am confused. How can you eat without teeth?! And yes it is impolite. Or at least gross (sorry).
If you go out for a meal, then remove your teeth before going there or, when you arrive, go to the bathroom, put your teeth in a wee box and into your bag.

Still don't understand how you can eat without teeth.

It is impolite to take your teeth out in public because your denture should be treated privately. It is embarrassing for those who are staring on also for those who are dining out with you.Ask your dentist to recommend something to keep it intact.

If they hurt and you can`t eat with them, then of course take them out, don`t suffer just for the sake of other people that you don`t know. This reminds me about my father when he was elderly and came to live with me. He had lost his teeth, they had been missing more than 24 hours, but after countless cups of tea during that time, I managed to calm him down. Later I heard a rattle in the electric kettle,......I had found his teeth !!

Ha Ha Good for you Denny !

Some people will probably be "grossed out" by seeing your teeth on the table. What if you put them under a napkin or something? And I recommend that you wash your hands after putting them back in.

I agree with the previous answerer that you might want to go back to the dentist if your dentures are bothering you that much.

Ewwwwww. That is absolutely disgusting. Eat soup or something. If you have to take your teeth out to eat, then eat at home. Never, ever under any circumstances take your teeth out in public. ESPECIALLY where people are eating. Also if your dentures are bothering you that much, go back to the dentist and get them adjusted.

I had a retainer when I was younger - the orthodontist provided me with a small case to keep the retainer in as I was eating. I am certain that they must make something such as this for your teeth (it can be filled with a cleansing solution). It was solid-colored plastic, so no one had to look at the retainer, and it could be kept inconspicously on the table near my plate, if I wished, during the meal, so that I would remember the retainer after my meal was finished.

As you become accustomed to your new teeth and are able to wear them during meals, I would suggest that if the need arises to take your teeth out for cleaning (if something were to become lodged between the teeth and your gums, for example), to politely ask anyone who may be dining with you if they would mind if you took your teeth out to perform the quick cleaning (explain politely that you have something caught beneath them). Then perform the cleaning as discretely as possible, or keep the container you have for your teeth with you to put the teeth in if you choose to just take them out and finish the meal without them, performing the cleaning later.

I definitely wouldn't want to retreat to a public restroom in order to remove or cleanse my teeth! So I would be understanding of someone at the table who needed to do such things.

Ewwww. that's gross! LOL! Do you pick your nose while eating, or flick your dandruff while eating. Do you brush your hair in your food while eating? Do you fart while eating? Do you change your tampons while eating?

You should know the answer to this question. Yes it's rude to take your teeth out when eating in public

If you need to do this sort of thing you should go to the rest room and do it there.

I think it quite good form, if nothing else people will either be entertained or disgusted. But who cares what they think.
I do remember once walking into the kitchen and seeing something odd in a glass. It turned out to be my gran's teeth! A bloody shock. So do the youth a favour, indeed let your teeth be proudly shown!

Your new teeth should fit you properly. Go back and get them well fitted. In the meantime, if you want to eat in public, go to the washroom, put them in a baggie you brought with you, then return to the table to eat.

Taking out teeth at the table would be considered bad manners anywhere in the world I would imagine!
