My son is 4 and has ADHD. He wants a pet but I don't know what to get him. We have had fish in the past, but he would watch them for a little bit and then get bored. I have a cat at home but shes really old and lazy and he really doesn't have any desire to play with her. Any ideas for a pet that would keep him entertained (and not hard to clean up after because I will be doing the cleaning)

A dog. My son has ADHD and we got him a dog. They play really hard together and they lay together and he takes really good of her. Try it out. It was one of the best decisions I made.

I would definitely get you son some type of pet. Children with ADHD need a mass amount of extra attention and a pet would make him feel quite special. I do reccomend watching him around the pet you get because children with ADHD can get overly excited to the point of hurting an animal without realizing it. Anytime you see your son hurting an animal, take it out of the home immediately and contact your doctor about this.

I would suggest getting your four year old some birds. They are pretty cheap, entertaining and easy to clean up after. A puppy isn't hard to clean up after either but they might be expensive unless you can find something in the paper for free. I wish you luck and I hope you can find something for your son!

I had a guinea pig when I was a kid, she was really cool! She would squeal like a pig everytime we opened the fridge or brought home groceries, she would think the bags rustling meant we were getting her lettuce to eat! :) You can let them run around the house for a little while, and their poop is just little pellets so they are easy to clean up after. If they pee on your carpet you will want to have cleaner ready to go if you're letting them out of the cage. The only thing you would have to worry about is the guinea pig biting, so he would have to handle it gently, or you could spend a little money and buy a well-bred guinea pig that will have a better disposition than a $7 pet store one. The cages can be a pain to clean, but they make way better ones now than they used to and it should be a little easier. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Tortoise- They have an amazing amount of personality and are relatively easy to care for so your son can take an active role in its care.

Few warnings:
1. Reptiles can carry salmonella. Institute a hand-washing policy after touching any reptile.
2. Some reptiles need extra heat or light (full-spectrum) to be healthy. This can be costly. Make sure you do all of your research on proper care/habitats before choosing a pet.
3. Make sure your son is supervised with any pet. Just because a tortoise has a hard shell doesn't mean they are able to fend off a 4 year old!

Good luck!

A Chinchilla...

They are clean and when handled correctly very gentle, soft and mild tempered.

I would wait for the old cat to pass on first though. Cats and rodents do not fair well together.

Have you ever looked into the possibility that your child is actually an Indigo or Crystal child?

Not all kids with ADHD are Crystal or Indigo but some are... It is worth checking out, either way, it is a gentler less evasive way of dealing with their special needs without medication.

" Many of these children born now and into your future will confound and
exasperate their elders for they come here at this time with very definite
missions. Although they retain more of their knowing, they are still
somewhat veiled. It becomes your task to love them unconditionally, to
support and encourage them in their explorations and to help them discover
their purpose for being here, their missions. And to be appropriate role
models for them. These beings definitely will not live by bread alone!

Higher Energy Children
Many of these children will be highly energetic and highly excitable for they
carry different neurological wiring in their bodies. They will demand much
love and understanding from their families and their communities. These
children may appear to be society's misfits and, in a way, they are for they
herald the arrival of the sixth root race, the Indigo Race, upon your planet.
They are the forerunners of even higher dimensional beings to come. "

my son is 12 & has ADHD and absolutely loves our 1 year old german shepherd... (he actually thinks more of the dog than he does of his little sister) he has never hurt the dog and is always willing the pick the poo up from the garden which is hard to believe... i think dogs are good for ADHD sufferers as it burns off all that extra energy and it gives them the impression that they are in control of something.

Reptiles! Or,a hamster! Hamsters are fun to watch run in their little balls, and you can hold them and pet them. Plus, the cage doesn't need shavings changd everyday. Once or twice a week, and you're good.
