I am Theravada Buddhist so I'll try to make it shorter than War and Peace, thank you for asking such an inquisitive and yet insightful question, it is a rare event to find such.

From a Theravada Buddhist perspective then.

Before Rebirth a previous life's ending is reached. During that Life, experiences including choices of Action have taken place which have consequence in a positive, negative and neutral sense. These consequenses would have both immediate and in some serious cases long term implications. These effects are collectively known as Karma, a noun describing a phenomenon rather than a verb describing some esoteric cosmic entity.

Karma then has a resultant ultimate consequence on the Rebirth of the Life. The Life in question as described is made up of 5 impermanent and variable Skandhas or Parts and 1 permanent quite remarkable Part which is the ultimate essence if you will of each Life. On the onset of Death, those impermanent Skandhas are dissolved. They make up the personality, ideas, character, body, senses and consciousness of that Life, and they dissolve with the death of the body.

If only positive Karma is left to be resolved on death then only positive consequence is left and no Rebirth is required, on the other hand if there is any negative consequence outstanding to be resolved then as a result of that negative consequence, a Rebirth is the consequence and generally a more negative circumstance is the negative resultant of the negative Karma. The 5 Skandhas are rearranged due to the negative influence of the outstanding Karma and are reformed in different measure together with the remaining essence and a Rebirth occurs....a new Life. This is the basic mechanism to which all Life Forms are subject including animal Life as it is possible for a Rebirth to be influenced negatively to such an extent that it occurs as a lower order Life Form.

Buddhist see this plane of existence as the Human Realm, several Lower Realms from the animal Realm to the Spirit Realm to several Lower Hell Realms including Angry Spirits and Lower still luckily these Realms are only very short term and often last less than the standard Life Term as Life evolves rapidly from these Realms.

Above this Human Realm there are several Higher Realms of existence, I'm unsure of this doctrine but am aware of approximately 17 higher Realms which can be reached from this Realm and from which this Realm can be reached given sufficient purposeful and intentional reasoning. The Dalai Lama and several other ranking Lama Teachers having done so for the purpose of Teaching Humans and furthering the message of Universal Peace and fostering Love in periods of great turmoil are generally the reasons for these Beings returning for our benefit.

I hope that this helps your inquiry.

Peace my friend in the continuing season of joy.

I have the feeling that we are someplace in some form in the previous we r born and after we die. i imagine that in the previous start we, through a mentor, settle on what we pick to do after we r born. what our sufferings will be etc, so as that we may be able to advance spiritually with each and each and every existence we stay. that could want to describe intense suffering of little ones or everyone. they could have chosen that course in the previous they were born to journey what they necessary to journey to be extra perfect off spiritually. for instance, a toddler being born yet only taking a breath in the previous demise. perhaps that soul only necessary to journey existence. I have felt this kind considering i develop right into a baby w/noone coaching me it so when I analyze it as an human being, it made my conception more suitable. yet, perhaps it doesnt artwork that way for each human being. i imagine its a possibility to be completely different for somebody else and the actual incontrovertible truth that we argue or strive against about non secular beliefs seems the variety of waste to me because who's to assert there arent many countless issues happening rapidly interior the non secular realm. stay and enable stay is what i attempt to stay through

Buddhist pov: After the body physically dies, the mind continues on to something we call the "bardo" which can be chaotic and confusing if the mind isn't properly trained to journey it... descriptions of the bardo have supported people's claims to have seen various things like light, tunnels, people, etc. when they've flat-lined and been brought back. In the process of the bardo, the mind's clinging and attachments, or aversions will lead them to take rebirth accordingly.

There are many books available on the topic from various Buddhist publishers and some are even available at larger bookstores, like Borders.

Your consciousness goes to (according to theosophy) a place of spiritual rest: devachan. It's a state of consciousness constructed of your highest, purest dreams and aspirations. Sort of what heaven is in various other religions. The big difference to for instance Christianity is that it's not a place of eternal rest. Instead it's an in between place of rest. After that, you come back to earth to face your karma (bad and good).

~~~inquisite,,,,We are Spiritual Beings having Human Experiences to nurture our Soul's Growth. When we are not here, we are in 'a place' called The Etheric Realm, ie; a different 'dimension' . Please note this 'a place' where the Time/Space Continuum does not exist. Since christians do not believe in a 'pre-life', then the closest comparison of course is to 'heaven',,, but this concept is very lacking.
Before we are born God already thought me up and made a plan for me to follow.Later I will die and be resurected and he will make a new heaven and earth and in this earth those who opposed him burned for eternity.Than all those believers will all live a peaceful restful life we all dream of.
"As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change". 2:13
