I seem to find most things like posters, leaflets, brochures, etc are easier to design in Photoshop.

So what exactly is Illustrator used for???

WHat are the differences between Illustrator and Photoshop in terms of what you can you do and what they were designed for???

Thanks for your help.

I find Illustrator much more useful for drawing from scratch. If I am starting with photos, Photoshop is better. But if I am creating line art, or if I need to manipulate existing artwork (like clipart) then Photoshop is perfect.

If I had to describe the reason in a nutshell, I'd say it is because it allows you to see vector art in individual pieces, rather than as the sum of its parts. This includes fonts, when saved to outlines.

Photoshop can create vector-like shapes and typography but they become rasterized when the file is saved. I think that if you need to create complicated graphics like maps, logos, schematics, or even publications for print like ads, brochures, menus, etc, -- particularly with typography -- Illustrator is a better choice.

I use both on a regular basis.

Wow... Don't the word Illustrator mean anything to you?
look it up.

Photoshop now you know what that means

It manipulates photos by way of editing them in anyway the user decides

So Illustrator is a designers program the user can design anything that takes his wildest dream, thoughts and vision and illustrate it in any fashion he wants. on the internet, billboards, TV you name it, were ever he wants the show his work (designs) off

most of what you see in a day might have been designed by illustrator TV Ads are one example Movies are another

Use it for very high quality high precision designs that wont lose their resolution when they become enlarged. It is particularly good for clip art and creating scalable (vector) graphics.
