1. Ability to write VERY well is important. If there is one thing that can seperate two otherwise equally qualified people, the ability to write well is probably most important. This will impress others, make you stand out above others, make you stand out above competitors who write terribly or are foreigners, and also make your life easier because you can express your thoughts accurately, concisely, and colorfully.
2. Computer and high tech education is critical. Even though most programming is now done in the third world, you need to know about the rapidly changing technology and how to use it effectively.
3. Learning language. There is no excuse anymore for Americans to be mono-lingual. If you want to succeed in a globalized economy, you need to know at least two other languages. Thirty years ago, the USA lost a lot of its competitive edge because we failed to adapt to the metric system, and held onto archaic measures, while everyone else moved on. The same thing is happening with languages. If you want to succeed globally, you have to think (and speak) globally.

What kind of education??? I'll assume generic

1. by ensuring reading and writing practice, that will allow a young person to communicate, find a job, and understand the world around.
2. by teaching languages and geography, that will allow to know there is a whole world to take care of.
3. by teaching history, that shows clearly that there are consequences to our actions.
