Yes, they're important. It doesn't make you smart, necessarily, but you have to be able to demonstrate commitment to something and a diploma or degree certainly does that. In addition, the time spent in college or high school is like practice for the work that will come later, and if you slack off there, potential employers will think you'll slack off for them. So, yes, if we are talking about professional success, diplomas are important.

If we're talking about life-success through being a good person, living a meaningful and peaceful life, no, you can do that right now with or without a diploma!

it depends on where and how you want to succeed. many jobs demand one, and its hard to prove you have the skills they want if u don't have a diploma.
thing is a diploma is a piece of paper that tells someone that you sat through several years of a subject and remembered most of it in time for your exam. if you want a job where the employees want that kind of proof, your chances of succeeding without one are slim.
if what you want does not require that kind of thing, not having a diploma is no bar to success. the majority of the successful people in the world (successful in their own endeavors, not ranking on a forbes list) never got a diploma. quite a few people with diplomas have failed miserably. success in life does not depend on a piece of paper. it may make it possible to get a certain kind of job, but plenty can be done without one.

that is not however to say that given the opportunity to get a diploma you should pass on it. it involves an education and a major career plus at times, as some jobs are within reach of people with the diploma necessary only.

I believe they are. In order to be educated, knowledgeable, able to converse intelligently, etc, you must read and comprehend relatively complex concepts. Sure, you could read and study on your own, but why not receive documented credit for doing this (in other words, a diploma). Also, formal education forces you to study in a disciplined manner, within prescribed timeframes (semesters). Most people don't have this diligence without going to an actual college.
By the way, a high school diploma is practically mandatory! Otherwise, you'll be hurting bad for a job, and competing with illegal immigrants and ex-cons for the jobs that don't require a H.S. diploma.

Yes, I think having a diploma is necessary to succeed in life, becuase you need education to survive in today's world. How will you live your life, with no education or proffesional training? You'll need a job, and I'm sure "degrees" are most prefered now! The best thing you can do, is just finish school, and go to college!

No, but they sure do help. I have a HS diploma and I am working in a factory with immigrants without diplomas and they probably make the same as I do. I want to go to college but I have to help with the bills at home. My parents didn't set me up a college fund, so I'm on my own there.

Ugh, college grads make much more than high school grads. If you're thinking about dropping out of school, don't do it or you'll more than likely be working fast food the rest of your life.

I believe that it is important to atleast have a High School diploma, because these days its difficult to even get a job without it. However, I don't believe that its all necessary to take 4 years of schooling spending thousands, especially when a lot of people don't even get a career in the major they studied. I believe knowledge is important, and you can get that anywhere.. not just going to school.

This is just my opinion though.

You basically need a High School Diploma, or G.E.D.(which IS a Diploma), to get ahead in life. Fine it doesn't prove if you have a brain or not. On the other hand it is next to impossiable to get a job anymore without one.

High School Diploma, yes.

Otherwise, "everyone" is getting college degrees, but more and more companies are looking for people who have "experience."
